REVIEW: Brian Wolff & the Howlers – Leave the Lights On

Written by Craig Mcgreggor

Austin, TX–based music veteran Brian Wolff (formerly of Fair City Fire and Drums & Tuba) roars forward with his first full-length solo release, Leave the Lights On. Backed by his aptly named band, The Howlers, the album dropped this past August and has already found success with spins on stations like KUTX and Sun Radio, while earning favorable reviews from Apricot Magazine, Oleada Indie, and Indie Noise Nation.

The debut single and title track set the tone for the record, delivering a strong sense of hope and motivation over a backdrop of gritty rock, blues, and Americana. Wolff’s lyrical craft recalls Bruce Springsteen, his harmonies shimmer with a Fleet Foxes–like warmth, and his guitar riffs explode with the intensity of Gary Clark Jr. The result is a cohesive, genre-blending album that resonates with fans of rock, indie, blues, country, Americana — or anyone who enjoys porch beers, poolside afternoons, or a long drive under the Texas sun.

A multi-instrumentalist of rare range, Wolff has mastered guitar, vocals, bass, tuba, and live looping. On Leave the Lights On, he channels that versatility into storytelling and songcraft, boasting wisdom and honesty in his lyrics. Standout lines include:

  • “You’re my ride or die on this endless road”

  • “Stop living a half life, and start living some more”

  • “Leave the lights on, don’t close your eyes just yet”

  • “I told you that I love, I heard you say it back.  You gave it everything you had, I’ll always remember you for that”

These hopeful, anthemic refrains run throughout the record, urging listeners to tune out the noise, push past the bullshit, and live life to the fullest. He is actively touring, having just performed at the Austin-wide HAAM Day event on the 25th and at Fairground Austin. He will be performing at the Austin Coffee Festival on October 25, 2025.
